Fotografía de Pablo Alberto Salguero Quiles La rhodochrosite (MnCO3) est un carbonate de manganèse (II) cristallisant dans le système cristallin trigonal à réseau rhomboédrique, groupe d'espace R\bar{3}c, structure calcite. Son nom vient du grec "rhodon" rose et "chros (is)" couleur. Rose, rose-rouge, jaune, marron, la rhodochrosite forme une solution solide complète avec la sidérite. La substitution avec le calcium est limitée et l'existence de la kutnohorite Ca(Mn,Mg,Fe)(CO3)2, qui a une structure ordonnée type dolomite, suggère que la solution solide calcite – rhodochrosite soit limitée, du moins à température ordinaire. Le magnésium peut aussi remplacer le manganèse, mais la solution solide entre rhodochrosite et magnésite est incomplète. Quantités remarquables de zinc ont été aussi trouvées. La rhodochrosite est un minéral relativement rare qui se forme dans les veines hydrothermales des gîtes de Ag, Pb et Cu, associée avec d'autres minéraux de manganèse. Elle représente une source mineure de manganèse et est utilisée comme pierre ornementale. Elle peut difficilement être taillée à cause de sa faible dureté. La rhodochrosite est la pierre nationale de l’Argentine. |
