Synonyms and antonyms

The synonyms and antonyms of an word means the words that have the same and opposite meaning of the original word. However, different definitions of the word have different synonyms and antonyms. Therefore, this new feature is designed to keep things simple by showing the synonyms in a collapsible box under the original definition.

This feature was implemented on March 4, 2011. Many thanks to Brett and others from the English Wiktionary.

How it works

This new feature uses Javascript to have the collapsible box. If you have Javascript disabled, the synonyms and antonyms cannot be hidden and will be shown underneath the definition.

This feature works by adding {{synonyms}} and {{antonyms}} after the definition. These templates allow you to add up to 15 synonyms and antonyms. After saving the page, the page would display "[synonyms ▼]" or "[antonyms ▼]" after the definition. Clicking on it would result in the synonyms and antonyms to be displayed underneath the definition.

Examples

In the case of green, synonyms can be added by following this format:

# One of the [[color]]s people can see. {{synonyms|emerald|jade|olive|lime}}

This would add the words emerald, jade, olive and lime as synonyms of the word green in the context of this definition. Similarly, this format can also be used for antonyms, just like in the following case for quiet:

# Not loud; making no [[sound]] or making very little sound. {{antonyms|noisy}}

This would add noisy as an antonym for the word quiet in the context of this definition.

Notes

• {{synonyms}} and {{antonyms}} must be added after the definition, not on a new line separate from the definition.
• There can only be a maximum of 50 synonyms and antonyms at one time, which should be enough for most words.
