Defining extremely common words

change

Because this is the Simple English Wiktionary, it's important to use the most common words to define the most common words. A learner of English who doesn't know the word so, for instance, is certainly not going to know the word degree, so a gloss like "How much; very much" is likely preferable to one like "To such a degree."

Synonyms and antonyms

change

The goal with these is not to be a thesaurus, but to help clarify the meaning of the word. Again, because this is the Simple English Wiktionary, it's important to balance the need for familiarity with the desire for thoroughness. Somebody looking up though, for example, is unlikely to be helped by notwithstanding. Aim to use only those words that are roughly as frequent or much more so than the word being defined.
