A particle is a type of complement in a verb phrase, usually in the form of a preposition phrase (or sometimes in the form of an adjective in a more or less fixed expression), between a verb and a direct object or after the direct object (e.g., pick it up or pick up the paper). This category includes those words that can function as particles.
