Hello, BlackJar72, and welcome to the Simple English Wiktionary!

We hope you are happy editing here. Some helpful pages to begin with are Wiktionary:Community Portal, Wiktionary:Useful, Help:Contents, Wiktionary:Rules, and Wiktionary:How to edit.

If you want to talk with other members or ask a question, you can visit Wiktionary:Simple talk. Administrators can also help you with more difficult problems. You can also ask me for help. The best way to do that is to leave a message on my talk page. Just remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing "~~~~" (four tildes) at the end of your words.

Good luck and happy editing! · Tygrrr... 17:00, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Images

change

Simple English Wiktionary isn't the place for images or sound files. Upload that kind of stuff at Wikimedia Commons and then link to it from here. I'll delete Image:DukeEllington TakeTheATrain.ogg when you copy it over to where you want it.--Brett 18:37, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Since it exists on EN WP, I'm going to go ahead and delete it now. You can always upload it to Commons from there. For your convenience, here are links to Wikimedia Commons and Wiktionary:Image use. Thanks. · Tygrrr... 21:35, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion for multiple changes

change

When you make many changes to the same page in a short amount of time, you can use the "Show preview" button instead of the "Save page" button to see how your work is coming along. That way, the New changes page doesn't get quite so full with changes to the same pages. It also makes it easier for other users to check your changes. Thank you! · Tygrrr... 21:42, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Choosing entries

change

Please, feel free continue to to make entries for whatever words you are most interested in, but also consider focusing on words that are likely to be the most common or useful. You can find many such words here: Wiktionary:Simple_English_word_list.--Brett 14:10, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the link. So far I have picked words mostly from the requested page or the extended basic English page (and "thou" from the Wanted Pages), or filled in related categories. I didn't know about this page, but now I've book marked it. I will probably continue to work on Requested definitions a lot too. I think its a good idea to give meanings that have been specifically asked for. --Jared 14:24, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Another list of words of requested words can be found here. They're words that are linked to with a template that says we have a definition for them. Unfortunately, we don't have a definition for all of them yet. Maybe you had already seen my project page, and you certainly don't have to use it if you don't want, but I thought I'd point it out on the chance that you hadn't seen it and might be interested. · Tygrrr... 14:32, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template:wiktionary

change

Please note that because of this conversation I am in the process of removing {{wiktionary}} from pages. Therefore, this template shouldn't be added to any more pages. Thanks. · Tygrrr... 16:34, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Barnstar

change
Congratulations: You have been given a Barnstar!

For all the articles you have added to SE Wiktionary and for always improving. I award you this barnstar for all your hard work! :-) Tygrrr 16:17, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you :) -- I was afraid I'd get a message about my sloppy and reckless editing!
No way! You do great work! :-) I just finally caught up with you and got a moment to rest so I thought I'd let you know how much you're appreciated. · Tygrrr... 16:25, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thanks! It's nice to see some new blood in here. Recently, it's been just Tygrrr and me and even then I haven't really had that much time to contribute.--Brett 13:21, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Templates

change

Hi! I wanted to point out the existence of a couple of helpful templates: {{cu noun}} for countable and uncountable nouns and {{plural of}} for plurals. I noticed you use other methods for marking these things and thought you might be able to switch to the templates. Thanks! · Tygrrr... 17:23, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I redirected {{third person}} since we already have {{third-person singular of}}. If you would like to see all the "form templates" we currently have, you can check out Category:Form of templates. P.S. don't forget to use a "#" sign in front of the template when using them in articles. They should be numbered just like any other definition. · Tygrrr... 17:40, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks -- I did not know where to look. I tried {{third-person singular|}} as a guess, and when it did not work I just copied and modified {{plural of|}}. Including "of" did not occur to me for some reason.--Jared 17:46, 8 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Synonyms

change

Hi, Jared

I noticed that you added typhoon as a synonym for hurricane. I agree that this is so, but hurricane is about 100 times more common than typhoon. In general, since this is a dictionary not a thesaurus, and a simple dictionary at that, I prefer to give synonyms that will help the user understand the word rather than try to give an extensive list of synonyms. In other words, I generally aim for synonyms that are more likely to be known than the headword. This is simply personal preference, but I hope you would consider it.--Brett 13:47, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Despite my grumpy message on simple talk, I do appreciate the useful content you're adding.--Brett 18:58, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ditto. And I wanted to mention that this made me laugh, in light of this. I'm guessing it wan't intentional, but the appropriateness made me smile. :-) · Tygrrr... 19:08, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

iv

change

Hi there. In light of evidence that I have found on several online dictionaries, as well as on the English Wiktionary, roman numerals are always capitalized. I have therefore deleted iv because it is not uppercase. Thanks, and I hope you understand my rationale for deleting this, Razorflame 17:40, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Check out the French (I do not know French, but I could figure it out) -- also, Swedish and Turkish. Not English, but I but I've seen it (rarely) in English. Microsoft Word also uses lower case as an option in numbering; traditional outlining format goes:
I.
A.
1.
a.
i.
... so that is where I got it. I don't know if this is not standard, though. I'll leave it unless / until at least one other person has an opinion. --Jared 20:54, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
On second thought, it still automatically redirects, so it probably does not mater. --Jared 20:55, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
It automatically redirects because the MediaWiki software automatically redirects :P. iv was already deleted. I'm not sure if it is used widely enough to warrant its' own entry at the moment, but it might deserve one in the future. Cheers, Razorflame 21:56, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
This does lead to one concern, though, these will now remain as misleading red-links on this list. --Jared 23:36, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm...I see your point. I guess it wouldn't harm the project to have it redirect to the uppercase versions of the entries. Cheers, Razorflame 07:32, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is that your sandbox? If it is, I would like to suggest that you move it to User:BlackJar72/sandbox to make it more easily identifiable. Thanks, Razorflame 17:56, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

composer

change

Hi! I removed this from composer:

  1. (rare) A composer is a person who something else.

because it doesn't make sense as is. It appears to be missing a word or two. Feel free to put it back after it's been fixed. Thanks. · Tygrrr... 19:17, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Careful...

change

Hi there. Please be careful with what you remove from ax. While some of what you removed was correct, it was not correct to remove the pronunciation, category, or interwiki links. Please be more careful in the future. Thanks, Razorflame 19:29, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Articles you make

change

Hi there. When you make an article on here, could you please check on the English Wiktionary's article for any related words and for the pronunciation, because it does get quite tiring after a while to add the pronunciation to the articles that you make. Thanks, Razorflame 19:31, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I often go back and do that later, once interwiki adds links. Note that I've been criticized for using too many complex synonyms, antonyms, as so on, so I do not try to add everything possible.--Jared 00:12, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yeah, it would be cool if we had an IPA box here, in case general English does not have pronunciation.--Jared 00:13, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Feel free to add one.  :). Cheers, Razorflame 03:25, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pages with mulitple word defs

change

Please do not create pages that have definitions of multiple words on them. A different spelling warrants creating a different page. Words that have both a capitalized and lowercase definition should have separate pages. Words that are prefixes should not be on the same page as the same version of that word without the dash. I have had to fix this multiple times for you and I would appreciate you taking the time to create separate pages for each word, as this is the correct way. In case you're not sure what I'm talking about, some examples of pages I've fixed include:

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions! · Tygrrr... 15:56, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please read

change

Hi there. Can you please ready Help:Creating a new entry please? The entries that you have been making have not been complete and have not been formatted correctly, and it would be very helpful if the entries that you make could be formatted correctly so that you don't make more work for other people. Thanks, Razorflame 20:19, 23 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't see anything listed that I have not done.--Jared (talk) 20:46, 23 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
For example, on cattle, you forgot to include the bold use of the word used in the definition. Please see the edit I made to cattle to see what I mean. Otherwise, yes, you've been getting better, so keep it up :) Thanks a bunch for your contributions thus far! Razorflame 20:47, 23 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your sandbox outside of userspace

change

A sandbox of yours was found outside of the userspace. This is usually not allowed, so in this case, I've moved it from the article space to your userspace as User:BlackJar72/sandbox2. I just wanted to let you know. Thanks, Razorflame 18:18, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
