Exemplifying vs merely using on Simple Wikt

change

Thank you for your recent edits on Simple English Wiktionary! When you add a sentence, try to use the word in a way that both helps make its meaning clear and represents that typical context in which the word is used. An example like That man is Mexican gives very little sense of either of those. --Brett (talk) 20:57, 18 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Brett: Alright, thank you! Usually, I edit Wikipedia, so I wasn't very accustomed to the layout and policies. Zhangj1079 (Saluton!) 21:03, 18 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

-er nouns like adorer

change

We could make entries with -er noun entries for almost every verb, but that would probably not be a good use of resources. The word adorer occurs at a rate of about 0.01 times per million words in the COCA corpus. --Brett (talk) 15:45, 14 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

The same applies to re- verbs like reignite.--Brett (talk) 10:46, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Brett. Hiàn (talk) 17:46, 23 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Rollback

change

I have nominated you for rollback. The nomination is at Wiktionary:Requests for permissions/Rollback. Pkbwcgs (talk) 15:14, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Rare words

change

Why have you started adding entries for a bunch of extremely rare words? While you can do so if you wish, it seems like an awful waste of time, especially when there are so many common words that lack an entry.--Brett (talk) 01:26, 12 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I was looking through the old WOTD archives at en.wikt. If you feel they're unnecessary, delete them. hiàn 01:36, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
I agree with Brett. Words like agonic, alpenglow and agon are rarely used and it is a waste of time. Why not look into Wiktionary:Requested definitions for all the words that need an entry here? I usually look at this page for any entries that are required. Pkbwcgs (talk) 09:38, 12 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Noted. hiàn 21:35, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

how do I create a user subpage ?

change

You have canceled my COMBINED SIMPLE wordlist and suggested to post it on a user subpage ... How can I create such a subpage ?

Thanks for any feedback !

Jansegers (talk) 11:07, 28 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Jansegers: Hi, and sorry for the later than usual response (I am away on vacation). I had self-reverted to err on the side of caution, if you would still like to create a user subpage, you can do so by creating a page at Special:MyPage/SUBPAGE NAME, replacing "subpage name" with whatever you'd like to name it to. Cheers, and feel free to ask about anything else if you're finding issues. Hiàn (talk/editing on mobile account) 02:52, 29 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thx alot ! Jansegers (talk) 20:32, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sandbox for Interface administrators

change

If you don't mind, I think it is fine and I would like to move to actual policy. Is that ok with you? Tyler de Noche (talk) 16:10, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

I am alright with that, but keep in mind that (1) the draft has not been backed by the community yet and (2) the sandbox page has previous revisions that are irrelevant to the policy. Hiàn (talk) 16:14, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I have posted it. The post you created on Wiktionary:Simple talk can be commented on for changes. Tyler de Noche (talk) 16:37, 24 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Countable vs uncountable

change

If you want to know whether a word can be countable, try counting it, and do a search to see if it appears in the plural in a corpus like COCA, for example, by searching for sunsets.[n*]. The vast majority of nouns have countable senses. When it comes to uncountable, if the word can be used without any determiner like the, a, my, this, etc... in the singular, then it's uncountable. By this test, sunset as the time of day is uncountable.--Brett (talk) 10:20, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brett, thanks for the tip and for catching that. I'll be sure to use the COCA link in the future, normally I check the enwikt entry first. Hiàn (talk) 20:05, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Tamper & Mar

change

I think the use of the passive in the explanation is a good choice. Nicely done!--Brett (talk) 22:06, 27 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Much appreciated, Brett. :) Hiàn (talk) 22:08, 27 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Synonyms

change

When we started out, more than a decade ago, there was just a list of synonyms at the bottom of each page, adn many legacy pages retain that approach. It was, however, realized along the way that synonyms relate to individual word senses, not to heawords, leading to the {{synonyms}} approach. Since you seem to be into cleaning things up, this is one thing that would be useful to do. Keep in mind, however, that as a simple English wiktionary, our goal is not to be a thesaurus, but simply to put a number of useful, common, synonyms and antonyms that will help the user understand the word.--Brett (talk) 12:48, 29 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note Brett, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Hiàn (talk) 20:41, 29 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

blow the whistle

change

My suggestion is to uncheck the "leave a redirect". Tyler de Noche (talk) 21:09, 25 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I was going a bit too quickly - forgot to uncheck it there. :) Hiàn (talk) 21:12, 25 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your consistent commitment to this site. Thank you!--Brett (talk) 21:10, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Brett, I really do appreciate your comment. Rest assured, I'm going to continue editing here (my activity should pick up after exams) and still have no intention of leaving anytime soon :-) Thanks for sticking around all this time too. :) Hiàn (talk) 21:18, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
