The site notice needs updating. There is a new voting round. --The New Mikemoral (talk) 23:32, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I emptied the page. A global notice will come around when the foundraiser is done (around 15 Jan). Meta takes care of it. But thanks fr the notice. --Barras talk 10:39, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

a little vs a lot (of)

You can't say "a lot water". You need of. But with a little you can say "a little water". The wording of the definition differs in an attempt to reflect that.--Brett (talk) 16:08, 17 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Exemplifying vs using

Examples like the following use the word, but they don't exemplify it.

  • This man is a marine.
  • There are people with many good abilities.

In other words, there's nothing characteristics about the word in question in the rest of the sentence. In the first one, marine could be anything from boxer to refugee to sculpture. Similarly, in the second abilities could be friends, memories or genes. To improve this, consider the words that go together. To get a better idea, check out the Corpus of Current American English website. As you see, ability goes with limited. skill, affect, demonstrate, and improve. Click on those, and you'll get lots of examples that you can build on. Then you get a better sentence that actually exemplifies the meaning and grammar of ability:

  • This class will improve your ability to speak Spanish.

--Brett (talk) 00:04, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Brett. I'll do my best to improve my ability of writing examples! Barras talk 17:36, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Defining style with prepositions

It would be nice to use sentences with the prepositions, but they are difficult to form. The one for aboard didn't work, and generally using the verb means doesn't help show the grammar of the word because the word is then only mentioned in the sentence, not used (see here).--Brett (talk) 02:43, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, it's mostly not completely easy to create grammatically correct sentences. I'm happy that you've a look at the changes and I appreciate this. It's the best way to improve my English. Barras talk 17:36, 26 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Prepositions (leftwards)

Hi, Barras

The general style for writing definitions is to use the word in an explanation. The idea is that this gives some clearer idea to people about how the word is used. Thus,Your palm is the front of your hand shows that palm, being a body part, usually is preceded by a possessive noun or pronoun. In contrast, when we use the verb means (e.g., Leftwards means...), we are mentioning the word rather than using it (see here). This adds no information. For that reason, most prepositions and many adverbs have been written in a somewhat different style. We should probably leave them alone so that there isn't a mixture of styles. On the other hand, if you can find a way to USE the preposition in an explanation, that would be great.--Brett (talk) 17:52, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brett! Thanks for the advice. I'll revert my edit there for now and leave it as it is. Best, -Barras talk 08:01, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

RP

RP templates should be changed to UK as per the way that we have done things since a year ago. Please remember to do this in the future. Thanks, Razorflame 18:09, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Maybe it would be easier to leave it as a redirect to the UK template... redirects are cheap. -Barras talk 21:29, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
No, it shouldn't be used as it would be more confusing than just UK, which is the reason for the UK template. Razorflame 21:55, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
And if on our Wiki we normally use UK instead of RP, it may be easier to redirect. Newcomers from enwiktionary for example would have it easier. -Barras talk 09:04, 15 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
We shouldn't be using the RP template, though (even a redirect) because a) it isn't unified (for example, some pages will use (UK) while some use (UK), and this creates disunity, which isn't very useful in a dictionary. A dictionary needs to be as uniform as possible :) and b) UK is simpler than RP. Hope this helps to explain it further :) Razorflame 01:20, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't matter if you put in (UK) or (UK) since both show up as the same and also point to the same page. It makes it easier for newcomers, especially from other Wiktionaries. The reader doesn't really care if there is the {{UK}} or {{RP}}. If someone gets confused, s/he can ask. If we grow up and once decide to us not only UK, but also RP, it will be much easier to fix it then. However, if you really feel that we should delete this template, then please propose it for deletion and let's see what our (small) community thinks. -Barras talk 09:38, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I see your point there :) Razorflame 11:13, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
As I said, feel free to propose it for deletion. If other people think as well that this should be deleted, I won't make any problems and delete it., thought I think it is useful :) -Barras talk 17:36, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Patrolling pages

When you patrol a page, can you please remember to check the English Wiktionary for any additional parts of speech, any pronunciations on the English Wiktionary, as well as any related words, synonyms, or antonyms? It would be very helpful :) Thanks, Razorflame 01:18, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, just use the patrol tool only to ensure that there's no vandalism. But I will try to remember and take more care of such things. -Barras talk 09:39, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
It really isn't that hard. All you have to do is just look up the page on the English Wiktionary, and if it has pronunciation, add it. That's all. :) Cheers, Razorflame 11:12, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Re the above, I was trying to avoid the redlink "RIRs" at the bottom of Special:Contributions/127.0.0.1 etc. by creating mainspace page Regional Internet registry. In the alternative, please unlink "RIRs" on pages MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext and MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer-anon or link it to something more appropriate. Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ 05:00, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps a link to w:Regional Internet registry would be more appropriate, like the enwikt http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext version. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 05:19, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Unlinked. The Wikipedia article isn't really helpful either. -Barras (talk) 05:48, 15 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
The English Wikipedia article has much more info than the Simple English Wikipedia article, but it is less simple. I frankly forgot what was in article Regional Internet registry here, so access to its contents and edit summaries would help me to better explain what I did and why.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:55, 16 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
User:Jeff G./Regional Internet registry. -Barras (talk) 07:01, 16 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! It was a softredirect to en:w:Regional Internet registry (the English Wikipedia article). What about that article is not helpful to you? Thanks again!   — Jeff G. ツ 07:14, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Softredirects in main space to other Wikipedias are rather unhelpful. If someone types something here in Wiktionary into the search, they want a definition not a Wikipedia entry or a link to it. -Barras (talk) 08:57, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Putting aside the issue of softredirects in mainspace, would you consider linking "RIRs" to en:w:Regional Internet registry or its URL http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/w:Regional_Internet_registry ? Thanks!   — Jeff G. ツ 14:37, 20 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Not really something I really like, because the article might be not easy to understand. However, I've done it. Once the simpleWP article is better, we will change the link. -Barras (talk) 15:48, 20 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
