Process ideas for software development

Hello,

I am notifying you that a brainstorming session has been started on Meta to help the Wikimedia Foundation increase and better affect community participation in software development across all wiki projects. Basically, how can you be more involved in helping to create features on Wikimedia projects? Change in renaming process

Single-user login (SUL) finalisation's goal is so that every Wikimedia editor has a single, recognized global account with one username across all projects. As you may know, after a long delay, it's now underway as an effort between bureaucrats, stewards, and Wikimedia Foundation engineers. This will also allow for development of cross-wiki tools like global notifications and watchlists. There is no set date for the completion of single-user login finalization at this time.

The process involves changing all rename processes into one global renaming process. The ability for local bureaucrats to rename users on this wiki will be turned off on Monday, 15 September 2014, as one of the first steps. Global renamers are in the process of being created to make sure projects and languages are represented by the time this occurs. I sent a note to every bureaucrat about this process three weeks ago with an invitation to participate and many have begun requesting to be a part of the group. Together with the stewards, the global renamers will be empowered to help editors work through the often difficult process of getting a global name.

In parting, visit Special:MergeAccount to unify your account if you have never done so. If your local pages about renaming still need to be updated, please do so and consider pointing people to m:SRUC for future rename requests, especially if this project does not have bureaucrats that hold global renamer permissions. Template:audio

Hi, it's been a while since I've contributed here. On en.wikt, the en:Template:audio displays with an audio player bar and I thought I'd suggest that simple.wikt uses the same since it make it easier to play audio. Just a thought. Mikemoral♪♫ 05:03, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Section titles

Several of the standard section titles seem like odd choices for a "Simple" dictionary. I'd like to see terms from the BNC1 if possible. Would it not be better to replace "Synonyms" with something like "Also called" or "Or say", or at least wikilink them to a definition of synonym? "Antonym" might better be "Opposed term". "Homophones" might be "Sounds like". If there's agreement to do so, it should be a simple bot task to make the changes project-wide. What do the regulars here think? Meta RfCs on two new global groups

Hello all,

There are currently requests for comment open on meta to create two new global groups. The first is a group for members of the OTRS permissions queue, which would grant them autopatrolled rights on all wikis except those who opt-out. That proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Creation of a global OTRS-permissions user group. The second is a group for Wikimedia Commons admins and OTRS agents to view deleted file pages through the 'viewdeletedfile' right on all wikis except those who opt-out. The second proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Global file deletion review.

We would like to hear what you think on both proposals. Both are in English; if you wanted to translate them into your native language that would also be appreciated.

It is possible for individual projects to opt-out, so that users in those groups do not have any additional rights on those projects. To do this please start a local discussion, and if there is consensus you can request to opt-out of either or both at m:Stewards' noticeboard.

Global AbuseFilter

Hello,

AbuseFilter is a MediaWiki extension used to detect likely abusive behavior patterns, like pattern vandalism and spam. In 2013, Global AbuseFilters were enabled on a limited set of wikis including Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki.org, Wikispecies and (in early 2014) all the "small wikis". Recently, global abuse filters were enabled on "medium sized wikis" as well. These filters are currently managed by stewards on Meta-Wiki and have shown to be very effective in preventing mass spam attacks across Wikimedia projects. However, there is currently no policy on how the global AbuseFilters will be managed although there are proposals. There is an ongoing request for comment on policy governing the use of the global AbuseFilters. In the meantime, specific wikis can opt out of using the global AbuseFilter. These wikis can simply add a request to this list on Meta-Wiki. More details can be found on this page at Meta-Wiki. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on m:Talk:Global AbuseFilter.

I will try to get someone to look at the problem and to fix it so you can edit the userpage. Picture wordlist?

Hello all,

Simple English Wikipedia has a page called Basic English picture wordlist, which associates some basic words with pictures. Don't ask me where the words on the list are from, as I don't know. I think, a similar page would probably make sense on Wiktionary as well. This is just an idea, though, so what do you think? --Eptalon (talk) 10:55, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

There seems to be an existing one of 200 words that already existed: Wiktionary:Basic English picture wordlist. It is a wonder as to why it is different from the Simple English Wikipedia's version. A long time back we had a dicussion to replace some of the images (for example: ant, army and dog), to make sure that a person looking at the image really gets the intended meaning. As an example, take dog, where we chose to change the picture. Supposing the source is the same, the words should also be. So if you find differences in words (some that are absent from one of the lists), this should really be looked at.--Eptalon (talk) 13:44, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Project: Wiktionary meets Matica srpska

We would like to inform you about the project. This project aims to increase support for Open Knowledge / Free Content movement through establishing long term strategic partnership with the venerable cultural institution Matica srpska and to increase the quality, accuracy and volume of Wiktionaries through digitization of two dictionaries, while developing a potential model for future development of cooperation across Wiktionaries through targeted mobilization of the communities.

There are two activities within the project that we need your support for. First, we are preparing a list of lexicographical terms (it would contain approximately 100 terms) that needs to be translated into as many languages as possible, in order to ensure further work on the project and to create the foundations for other lexicographical projects in the future. For this task, we would use a separate application, but all of the terms would be inserted into Wiktionaries, as well (making approximately 10,000 new entries per Wiktionary, counting that the terminology would be translated into 100 languages). That would also serve as the preparation for translating the Serbian Ornithological dictionary, which is the second activity.

The Serbian ornithological dictionary encompasses all local names of birds living on the Serbian speaking territory. All names are specified under the appropriate Latin name in accordance with the contemporary classification system. This creates the opportunity to translate it easily to various languages, since the basic list of terms is in Latin and it is fairly small (370 species of birds).

We would like to try and motivate as many Wiktionary communities as possible to participate in translating these two dictionaries, especially since the benefit for each particular Wiktionary would be great - for example, if we succeed to motivate people from 100 Wiktionaries to participate, the amount of primary entries to these 100 Wiktionaries would be 3,700,000 (37,000 per Wiktionary). If we succeed to motivate just 20 Wiktionaries, the amount of entries to these 20 Wikitionaries would be 148,000 basic entries. Of course, these entries would be incorporated into the respective Wiktionaries according to the interest and the rules of each community.

With this project, we are opening cooperation with the venerable Serbian cultural institution Matica srpska [2] and we believe that this partnership will have major impact on future cooperation between Wikimedia organizations and similar institutions in Slavic countries. If this cooperation could be relevant to any other partnership you are trying to establish in your country or globally, we would be more than willing to share our knowledge and contacts.

Besides support in translation, we are open for Wikimedia volunteers to participate more substantially and thus build knowledge inside of the community on how to deal with this kind of data. For example, if you are willing to join the core team and help us in communication with the Wiktionary communities of the languages which you are speaking, please contact Milica (milica.gudovic@yahoo.com) or Milos (millosh@gmail.com) via email. The same goes if you are willing to contribute by coding in Python and/or PHP.

Approval for BarrasBot (automated archival)

Hi all!

I would like to have my bot BarrasBot (talk · changes) approved and flagged on this project to archive pages manually. It has been approved and flagged on simpleWP already and runs only when I can watch it. It will automatically archive pages like ST, Adminnoticeboard and talk pages where a certain template is added.

I tested it already on this page. As the code is the same as on WP and as used by many other people running such a bot, there shouldn't be any problems.

I'd like to get this bot formally approved and flagged. (I will add the flag when no fellow crat does it after a week or so :)). Pinging User:Brett and User:Tempodivalse.

Blocking of JVRKPRASAD for abuse of AWB usage

This is to inform the community that I have blocked User:JVRKPRASAD for spamming Special:RecentChanges with changes made using AutoWikiBrowser (AWB). While the changes were made mostly in good faith (to add an interwiki link to te: for each page), most of them were pointing to non-existent articles. I have thus blocked this user for 1 week and may extend if necessary.

I would also like to bring across the point that if such major changes are to be made, it is important to consult the community on this before proceeding to avoid spamming recent changes and a difficult cleanup effort if anything were to go wrong. Thanks. --Hydriz (talk) 14:15, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Can't we simply restrict AWB usage as on other wikis, using a page/list for users allowed to use AWB besides admins? Furthermore, aren't interwikis handled by wikidata now or are wiktionaries not yet included? -Barras talk 15:01, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Also, just randomly checking the added interwikis, I just found at least two where the corresponding page does not exist. I really think about rolling back right away all his recent edits. Oh, and I fully endorse the block, btw. -Barras talk 15:06, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Wiktionary is likely to be the last to be added to Wiktionary, so it will probably not happen in the near future. The interwiki bots we have are also cleaning up the wiki right now, removing the interwiki links that don't exist. I already seen both YS-Bot and HydrizBot removing some of the interwiki links that were added, so the cleanup is underway. --Hydriz (talk) 22:28, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Any clue on how to restrict it? Do we just create a check page here or are there more settings to be made? Also, with the user no knowing what's going on, you might want to consider to unblock him. I don't think he will do the same thing right away again. -Barras talk 22:37, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
