Can I add foreign words in Simple English Wiktionary?

change

Sorry, I am new to Simple English Wiktionary, and you seems to be the most active editor here so I think I can ask this on your talk page. Can I add foreign words to this Wiktionary and explain it Simple English? All(/most) words that I found here are English words and I wonder if there is a rule that forbids foreign from being added. Or is it just because this is a young project? --Trezoo (talk) 11:09, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Trezoo: Hello. Foreign words are not accepted here. --Minorax (talk) 11:13, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oh thanks. --Trezoo (talk) 11:14, 14 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pretty lonely here... eh? Last editor (Ferien) edited a day ago. You must have made 95% of this wiki's articles(???). That's more the the SE wikipedia's TDKR Chicago 101 who created 17% of that wiki's articles. Also, thank you for moving Hyperthermia to hyperthermia. I am not used to wiktionary and thus capitalise all article(?) names. Elytrian (talk) 15:04, 30 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

change

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi, Minorax. Nice to meet you. I'm excited you've chosen SEWT as a place you want to contribute. I may seem like a SEWT noob, since you haven't seen me around until a few days ago, but I'm actually a veteran around here. I've just been on a very extended WikiBreak. I don't know how long my return will last, but let's hope it's a nice long time.

I must say that I'm impressed by your passion and staggered by your level of activity.

Thanks for cleaning up my new entries and adding things like pronunciation. I did notice you made the definitions into complete sentences. That's what I was doing for the first few entries after my return, but then I ran across a few without that, so I switched. I think some of the ones I saw might have been the low cardinal numbers like four. Many of them say something like, "The number four." Especially on the Noun definition. I am certainly in favor of complete sentences for definitions, though. They are easier to read and understand, I think.

I noticed one thing that I don't know how to fix: the numbers box at the top, on the entries about ordinals, doesn't include the multiples of 10 above the current number that the cardinals does (except for first and second and twentieth). I think that should go at least through tenth. Also, it stops at tenth, with no number to the right. If you choose eleventh down below in the related words, the box is there, with a link back to tenth, but not from tenth to eleventh. I'm hoping you know how it works and how to fix it. There are some other kinks to work out with that very useful box, but that's a good start.

I look forward to working more with you! --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 17:48, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Cromwellt: Hey. Glad to see you back! I've requested for help on en.wikt as I can't really read lua. Minorax (talk) 11:09, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

garlicmonger

change

Hello, could you please let me know why did you remove the quotation? Here, at Simple, are we not supposed to have illustrative quotes on entries? Thanks, —Svārtava (t/u) • 06:27, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Svartava: Yes, we do occasionally have quotes in entries. However, the one at garlicmonger seems to be a tad too complex. Minorax (talk) 09:59, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Then, where do we add the quotes that may not be appropriate/desirable in the entry itself (it seems we don't have a citations namespace?) or do we avoid them altogether? —Svārtava (t/u) • 11:02, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Svartava: Generally, we do not use quotes as they are typically more complex in nature. In place of that, we use simple sentences in attempt to make the word more understandable.
At butcher, one of the example sentences provided is "I went to the butcher to buy a steak.". This describes that a butcher is a person who sells meat.
In my opinion, example sentences should only be provided when 1. it complements the explanation of the word's meaning or 2. shows how the word can be used in a sentence (mainly for verbs and adjectives). Words that essentially describes itself, such as fishmonger and garlicmonger, do not need to have an accompanying example sentence as it would be plain redundant to have "I went to the fishmonger to buy fish". Minorax (talk) 11:19, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I got it, thank you for the explanation. I'll ask in case of any questions in future. —Svārtava (t/u) • 11:24, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Is the trimmed quote at thural alright? I added it since the term is obsolete and uncommon and the meaning might otherwise be a bit confusing/unclear. —Svārtava (t/u) • 11:52, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Svartava: Seems fine. Minorax (talk) 12:12, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I use mobile phone so I don't know the page on computer but on phone, the page looks eccentric.

——Victor Bob (talk) 05:11, 29 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

While the Simple Wiktionary aims to make the site conducive to all, a vast majority of users are using computers and most templates are catered for them. I've made some changes to some templates and I hope it makes the mobile view less eccentric. Minorax (talk) 05:37, 29 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello Minorax and Victor Bob.
Pardon me for jumping into your conversation, but I think that the most common platform is actually changing, especially in places outside of the Anglosphere. For example, many more people in Sub-Saharan Africa have cell phones than have access to a laptop or desktop computer. Almost all their web access is by mobile. Sorry that I don't have references to back up what I've heard, but I believe it's true. To me, that means the view on mobile should be something of a priority. Maybe not top priority, but not the bottom either. I always used to view and edit Wikipedia on my laptop and now I almost always do so on my phone. --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 02:10, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Are there issues that you see when on mobile view? --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 03:43, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

中国🇨🇳

change

Victor Bob [talk] 05:21, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

请参WT:NPOV。大部分的国家都认为台湾是个独立的国家。可以說台灣是中國的一部分,這只是一種觀點,但不是事實。你把台灣和中國是不同國家這句話去掉,就是把它變成了事實。Minorax (talk) 05:25, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm sending this to get your feedback as a CU-experienced user on the cases mentioned in the heading above. My previous decision (special:redirect/logid/129864) is based on the concern of somebody having/using so many accounts more than the number of our active editors with their involvement in sensitive topics (wide-range RFDs like Wiktionary:Requests_for_deletion/archive#Category:Nouns_with_irregular_plurals,_Category:Irregular_nouns,_and_Category:Irregular_parts_of_speech and Wiktionary:Simple_talk/Archive_33#Category:Emoticons, ST discussions for sitewide changes like Wiktionary:Simple_talk/Archive_33#Proposal:_Change_the_languages_on_the_login_page, etc.). In other words, I thought that this would be a threat to a smaller community like here. As closing remarks, I have pointed out that the user is welcome to come back with their main account at that time (special:diff/524419, special:diff/524420). However, recent related enwiki CU results show that my request for minimal-account restriction has been disregarded (w:special:redirect/logid/2840123, Special:Diff/533214).
