Does this word really exist? There are no other entries in the other versions of Wiktionary. I have checked Genius (6th edition), OLEX (2nd edition) and Progressive (4th edition), these are one of the most popular English dictionaries in my locality, but I cannot find such word. If possible, I think this entry should be protected to prevent future creations. MathXplore (talk) 10:57, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

The article has been created again with no improvements and references. I believe this entry must be protected. MathXplore (talk) 09:09, 16 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Done.--Brett (talk) 10:38, 16 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Looks like full-protection is needed. MathXplore (talk) 09:45, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
You made it edit-protected and move-protected, but it needs to be create-protected. Lights and freedom (talk) 17:30, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's right. In addition, I think the creator should be blocked. He's not here to build Wiktionary. MathXplore (talk) 08:10, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

New special page to fight spam change

Please help translate to your language

Hello, We are replacing most of the functionalities of MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist with a new special page called Special:BlockedExternalDomains. In this special page, admins can simply add a domain and notes on the block (usually reasoning and/or link to a discussion) and the added domain would automatically be blocked to be linked in Wikis anymore (including its subdomains). Content of this list is stored in MediaWiki:BlockedExternalDomains.json. You can see w:fa:Special:BlockedExternalDomains as an example. Check the phabricator ticket for more information.

This would make fighting spam easier and safer without needing to know regex or accidentally breaking wikis while also addressing the need to have some notes next to each domain on why it’s blocked. It would also make the list of blocked domains searchable and would make editing Wikis in general faster by optimizing matching links added against the blocked list in every edit (see phab:T337431#8936498 for some measurements).

If you want to migrate your entries in MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist, there is a python script in phab:P49299 that would produce contents of MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist and MediaWiki:BlockedExternalDomains.json for you automatically migrating off simple regex cases.

Note that this new feature doesn’t support regex (for complex cases) nor URL paths matching. Also it doesn’t support bypass by spam whitelist. For those, please either keep using MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist or switch to an abuse filter if possible. And adding a link to the list might take up to five minutes to be fully in effect (due to server-side caching, this is already the case with the old system) and admins and bots automatically bypass the blocked list.

Let me know if you have any questions or encounter any issues. Happy editing. Amir (talk) 09:41, 19 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Imported category-related templates/modules from English Wiktionary change

I noticed that templates/modules aimed for enwikt categorization has been imported to here without attributions. I think they were made for enwikt but not for our project. Is there any way to use these things in our project? MathXplore (talk) 07:43, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Don't really see a need for these. Other stuff should be nuked as well. Minorax (talk) 10:47, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Special:Contributions/Oxfcrd change

Dear admins, please have a look at their creations, names of languages or places should be OK, the question is for the others. They seem to be non-English terms, maybe out-of-scope materials, and similar to Wiktionary:Requests_for_deletion#Haoreima's_creations. On the other hand, the words come from regions where English is widely used, so maybe some of them can be counted as part of English. How should we do with these entries? Off-topic templates by Special:Contributions/Celeste369 change

Dear admins, I have noticed that the changes from this user are just welcoming others or making off-topic templates (templates without direct connection to the dictionary project) no contributions to mainspace Wiktionary contents, how should we deal with this? Should we continue to allow template creations for a while, send warnings, or proceed to further actions? What would be the most reasonable option? Suggestion of using AN edit notice to tell that this is NOT English Wiktionary change

The recent posts at our noticeboard (special:diff/515261, special:diff/515423) suggests that some editors may have thought that this is English Wiktionary's noticeboard. I think our noticeboard needs edit notice (or a reminder on page top) to tell this is NOT English Wiktionary. Similar reminders can be seen at simplewiki (w:WP:AN). What would our editors think about this? MathXplore (talk) 08:23, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

While I understand the call for a reminder about our noticeboard's non-identity, it does flirt with a Borgesian conundrum. If we start defining ourselves by what we are not, shall we also point out that we're not a bulletin for time travellers or a repository for Egyptian cookie recipes? The line between clarity and a labyrinth of non-identities is thin and easily crossed. :-)
In truth, I don't think the issue is likely to recur. Brett (talk) 10:12, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I just wanted to suggest that we should simply mention that we are not English Wiktionary (just like the simplewiki counterpart says "This is not enwiki"), I had no intent to suggest the creation of a large-scale documentation. At the best of my knowledge, mistaking simplewikt as enwikt is not frequently happening in a long term, but since there were 2 errors in a short period, I thought that this kind of suggestion should be discussed. Thank you for the feedback. MathXplore (talk) 12:47, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Remove permissions change

Hi there, I don't foresee needing the autopatrolled, rollbacker user permissions here. Would someone be able to remove those from my account here on simple Wiktionary? Much appreciated! Best, Maximillion Pegasus (talk) 05:46, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion to restore Category:Bodily fluids change

Per special:redirect/logid/15311, this category was deleted because it is "Too specific....Category:Biology works just fine for these pages". I generally agree with the importance of avoiding overcategorization, but I don't think this is too specific to understand. In addition, we don't have a category quick deletion criteria by specificity, and there seems to be no RFD for this deletion. Categorizing such pages as Category:Biology would be too vague. If there are no objections to restoration, I would like to bring back this category to our project. Please let me know if you have any opinions about this case. Thank you for your attention. All IP edits blocked change

No IPs have edited here in the last 30 days. It seems that whenever an IP tries to edit, they are prevented by an abuse filter called "vandal". Is this intentional? Maybe it's a good idea, as this filter eliminates almost all vandalism. Maybe we won't need to be communist (talk) 23:47, 22 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Minorax: Can you explain details about this case? MathXplore (talk) 03:03, 23 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category:Sex and Category:Sexuality change

I wonder if Category:Sex and Category:Sexuality should be merged. They seem to cover the same things. Kk.urban (talk) 03:43, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

(Request of clarification for the suggested action) May I ask how should we merge these categories? Should we merge Category:Sex to Category:Sexuality, or vice versa? Should we leave (category) redirects when merging (I think it is OK to leave redirects, w:en:WP:REDIRECTSARECHEAP). MathXplore (talk) 06:02, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure which title is better, but I think a category redirect is a good idea. Kk.urban (talk) 06:03, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
If I had to choose, I'd think sexuality is a better title. Kk.urban (talk) 06:04, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
At Japanese Wiktionary, I remember that an editor told me that sexuality is not simpler than sex (ja:カテゴリ・トーク:性). As Simple English Wiktionary, we cannot ignore simplicity. In your opinion, how does category:sexuality become better than category:sex, do you mean simplicity or any other factors? MathXplore (talk) 06:14, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think "sex" might be a bit too ambiguous, and "sexuality" has a clearer meaning. However, we could wait for other users to reply. Kk.urban (talk) 06:27, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see, some Wikimedians may want category:sex as a category disambiguation rather than an actual category. I fully agree to wait for others, there are no ongoing bulk creations at here, it is important but not urgent. MathXplore (talk) 06:33, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the clarification. When suggesting merges, how and how not to merge will be the core of the discussion. In future merge requests, please try to provide clarification from the beginning, this may make things easier. MathXplore (talk) 06:08, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
(Possible reason for categorization overlap) In my understanding, sex and sexuality are not the same. English Wiktionary refers to sex for sexual actions, while sexuality refers to sexual preferences. The range of categorization usually follows English Wiktionary (exceptions may exist, let me know if you see anything different). On the other hand, many versions of Wiktionaries add duplicate categories to single entries. This practice aims to make a word list for every level of the categorization scheme. I guess the categorization overlap of category:sex and category:sexuality comes from here. I think words specific to sexuality should go to the category:sexuality without being added to category:sex. However, we are the Simple English Wiktionary, and to make things simple, the category duplication practice must be re-considered in some cases (for example, science vs. pseudoscience, etc.). In the same manner, category merges may need to be discussed, to reduce confusion. What do our editors think about this? MathXplore (talk) 06:31, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It seems to me that currently the "sex" category is mostly sex acts, while "sexuality" is mostly unused. The former does seem simpler as a word, and broader. The second would have to be limited to human sexuality; I don't think it makes much sense to talk about plant sexuality, for instance. Brett (talk) 09:51, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree to limit Category:Sexuality for human sexuality. en:Category:Sexuality is managed in the same way, and it is easier to follow. Maybe non-human sexuality can be categorized in Category:Reproduction. MathXplore (talk) 11:56, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
